Research – Online Learning, Talent and Performance in the GCC -2016

As we sink our feet into the decreasing oil prices and wrestle with the unspoken soft recession in our region I can’t help wondering if we were either optimistic last November or we simply didn’t expect the impact the oil price would have on many of our businesses regardless of how close we were to the oil and gas industry. I say this because a side by side comparison from our year on year survey still shows the appetite for healthy budgets and spend in 2016.  Of course, now, in March 2016as we all realise there will, without doubt, be cuts in training budgets and “more for less” will be the battle cry for most forward thinking organisations this year.

For XpertLearning, recession (there I said it out loud) is good business. We are already getting calls and mails to ask if we can help organisations tighten their belts and build effective ROI in these leaner times and it’s a no brainer that learning online and managing talent through software will meet that requirement. To investigate the current and suspected status of Online-Learning and Talent adoption in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) a survey was conducted using expert participants at a conference organised by XpertLearning in November 2015. The key objective of this annual survey was to obtain an overview of companies in the UAE and Oman that already use Online-Learning and Talent Management systems and those that were investigating this modality.

Overview of Survey

The survey consisted a total of 15 questions 2 of which were posed around demographics and 13 questions are seen as part of the research in this report.

Demographics & Survey Results

The survey was completed by representatives of 80 large companies within different industries in the UAE. All participants were either Training and Learning Development Specialists or senior HR professionals. 75% of the participants stated that some form of Online-Learning was being used within their organisations.

Observations and Highlights

* Around 55% of the organisations surveyed said their L&D budget for 2015 were the same as the previous year, while 25% said it significantly increased.

* Over 46% said online learning had played a significant role in their L&D strategy as 41% said this to be on 50-50 basis.

* Almost all participants had expressed that video based learning was either important or extremely important as a learning modality.

* Only approximately 14% had deployed social networking for learning with 9% of those unable to correlate any success from this.

* 71% agreed that eLearning will exist in the next 5 years.
